October 2024

In the cool of the evening when ev’rything is gettin’ kind of groovy
I call you up and ask you if you like to go and meet and see a movie
First you say no, you’ve got some plans for the night
And then you stop, and say, “All right”
Love is kinda crazy with a spooky little girl like you

That’s how some people view the spooky season of October, but I’ll admit I’m kind of partial to this sign from Austin’s own El Arroyo Restaurant:

I love candy corn. Welcome to my favorite time of the year.

I cannot tell you how excited I was when my daughter became old enough to trick or treat many years ago. As for me, growing up in the middle of nowhere with our nearest neighbors being over 5 miles away and the nearest civilization (if you want to call it that) over 20 miles away, there just wasn’t a whole lot of decorating or trick or treating around the Perry household. So when my daughter hit 4 and understood she could ignore everything we had ever told her and go receive candy from complete strangers, she was all in with a dad who would dress up and go all out. She still goes nuts 30 years later in her and her husband’s tiny apartment in New York City. And me…well…

Can you say overcompensation?

If any of you have been to our two previous Halloween Spooktacular Movie Nights, you know I really haven’t grown out of it. Spooktacular is coming, and I hope you’ll join us for a fun night and a fun movie, 1990’s PG-13 rated TREMORS starring Kevin Bacon and a cadre of really well cast character actors. As always surprises will abound.

Last Month’s Action & Kudos

Last month was another full month here at Primetime, with hikes, happy hours, dinners out, concerts, trivia nights, football watching parties, game nights, book clubs, educational talks, and even a trip to the arcade for some old fashioned pinball action. There we got to watch in awe as Andy and Karen showed of their tandem pinball technique with each of them on opposite flippers. It worked well enough to win the coveted Pinballz Wizards 3 Championship Trophy after all.

As always, thanks to our tireless Event Hosts for keeping Primetime vibrant and active. This means you Robert, Jeffrey, Louise, Elizabeth, Anne, Greg, the other Greg, Barbara, Andy, Lynn, Mireya, Michael, Patty, Michelle, Heidi, Clare B., Patti, Janet, Rachel, Miki, and yeah, I did a couple.

Don’t see your name on here? You should do something about that. This is the best time of year to take advantage of the weather and get out there. Hit any of us up if you need help setting something up.

Coming Up

This month I’d like to highlight our literary and educational events.

For the last few months Michael has been hosting a new event called What Are You Reading? which ends up a kind of potpourri discussion of both fiction and non fiction. Although they haven’t been added to the calendar yet, there are also numerous other magazine discussions and specific book clubs that are sure to be added soon. Somewhat related is the Life, Literature and WineA Conversational Salon event hosted each month by Barbara and Louise. The event, led by a different attendee each month, is based on the time-honored practice of small groups getting together to expand their creativity through listening, speaking and even writing. The wine also helps.

I am also really encouraged by the addition to the schedule of educational talks. Last month we all learned about the ins and outs of Medicare. This month Jeff is hosting a talk on the benefits of crowd investing. That sounds interesting.

Anyway, its not all happy hours, game nights, and movies around here. We want our event calendar to be as diverse as our members. In that vein I am currently in the process of planning a series of talks with community leaders and influencers about the future of Austin and surrounding areas. I’ll wait until after the elections, and then start issuing some invitations to folks we might like to hear and learn from. The schedule will have to be highly dependent on the guest’s calendar, so watch our calendar closely starting in November for events popping up. Some may be relatively last minute.

Until then, keep on truckin’ Primetimers, and don’t let the Grabboids get you. They come from under the ground.

Gregg, on behalf of Louise, Barbara, Patty and Tom
