The month of May gets its name from the Latin word maius, a word which itself came from the Roman goddess Maia. Maia was a goddess of spring, growth, and fertility, and even her name was derived from maior, which meant “bigger”.
When you realize that, most of the May and May Day ancient traditions start to make sense.
But instead of focusing on that, I kind of like what we’ve done in modern times to celebrate May. After all, it’s National Salad Month, National Hamburger Month, and National Bike Month (all real). And of course let’s not forget Memorial Day and Mother’s Day. But I personally have great fondness for May 4th. Movie geeks and nerds know why, but in case your don’t, May the Fourth Be With You!
We so rarely get to point out how cute that is.
Anyway…back to Primetime. April was busy once again with 43 in person events and almost daily online events. Of course the highlight was the spring picnic at Lakeway Park, which turned into one of the largest events Primetime has ever held. I so wish I could have been there. Looked like everyone was getting in the spirit of spring. Make sure you check out the photo gallery for the event on the Meetup website if you haven’t seen them at https://www.meetup.com/primetimeatx/photos/33312873/.

As for May, we’re just getting warmed up. I personally had to postpone a couple of events in April because of weather threats, so they’ve all been rescheduled in May. And for all you mothers out there there’s a brunch on Saturday May 13 so you can celebrate and still spend Mother’s Day with your kids. https://www.meetup.com/primetimeatx/events/292745305/
But I think this month I’d like to feature our newcomer happy hours we hold every month, one north and one south. The north event is soon (May 1st), and it has a new home, the Baby Acapulco Restaurant near the Regal Gateway Cinema.

The south event is held on the third Monday of each month at Baker Street Pub on South Lamar. That means this time it’ll be a little earlier in the month than usual, on May 15th.

Both of these events are meant to be a laid back newcomer-friendly events where you can meet new friends or perhaps many old ones as well. It’s always a great way to ease into the group and find out what we’re about.
Summer and the legendary Texas heat will be here soon, folks. So let’s get out there Primetimers and enjoy the milder weather while we can.
